    Historic St. Simons Hotels

St. Simons Island is home to a couple of historic hotels that have a architecture and ambiance that make them unique and worthy of a visit.

The Village Inn & Pub was originally a 1930s beach cottage that was restored and enlarged to become what it is today.  The Inn was built around giant old oak trees without harming any trees or branches.  Such care is taken with the trees that even the development of the parking lot took the trees into consideration.  Instead of a pavement lot the lot is made of grass and shell pave to help preserve the trees’ root systems.  Each room in the Inn is different from the next making each stay a unique one.

The King and Prince Beach & Golf Resort is another historic hotel located on St. Simons Island.  King and Prince was originally opened in 1935 as a dance club six years later the King and Prince Hotel opened to the public.  During WWII the hotel was a training facility and navel coast-watch after the war in 1947 the hotel once again reopened.  The hotel has undergone several renovations throughout the years including adding many guest rooms.  The Resort is on the National Register of Historic Places and is now considered a luxury Georgia Beach Resort.

The Cloister opened its doors in 1928 as a “Friendly little hotel”.  Owner Howard Coffin had envisioned a large hotel however was counseled to build something a little smaller to test the appeal of the island.  Since then the little hotel has turned into quite the luxury resort on St. Simons Island.

    Sea Island Co. In Debt

I just found an interesting article about one of St. Simons Island’s best resorts, Sea Island.  The article starts out by saying,

“Georgia’s crown jewel of coastal resorts, the moss-draped playground of presidents and celebrities, has gone bust. The once-vaunted Sea Island Co. is awash in debt, badly behind on its loan payments and desperately trying to find a buyer for its five-star portfolio that once seemed immune to the economic whims that batter regular folk.”

However, the article goes on to say that the resort is still open and that they still have a sponsor for the US PGA Tour there in the fall.

Read the article in its entirety here on the AJC business pages.
